On Veterans Day, PBS’s new documentary This Emotional Life and Blue Star Families sponsored an event at George Washington University to honor the 1.8 million men and women who have been deployed in America's Armed Services and their families. First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden spoke at the event, where dozens of volunteers from civilian and military organizations helped to prepare 500 care packages for military families.

This Emotional Life, a multi-platform project culminating in a three-part documentary that will air on PBS on January 4, 5, and 6, 2010. The program uses personal stories and expert research to explore ways to improve our social relationships, cope with emotional issues, and become more positive, resilient individuals.

A primary goal of This Emotional Life is to generate discussion about the emotional challenges that many military service-people and their families face before, during, and after deployment. The documentary features Bob Shumaker, a Vietnam war veteran discussing his time as a P.O.W, and an Iraq War veteran battling PTSD. This Emotional Life shares the compelling stories of service men and women, and the project also provides resources to help military personnel and their families cope with the emotional struggles they may face.
