Yesterday, Concerned Veterans for America (CVA) held our first Defend & Reform Breakfast Series event, "Reforming Veterans Affairs: Preserving Promises to Those Who Serve."
With standing room only, multiple high-level officials and VA experts candidly discussed the steps needed to reform a department that is failing in its mission to serve veterans. It was refreshing to hear multiple voices with similar messages - Veterans Affairs can, and must, do better.
If you didn't have a chance to attend or watch the event, this AP news story includes quotes from attendees, while offering a balanced look at the debate over the VA backlog.
Of course, we still have a long way to go. While there has been purported progress in incrementally reducing the backlog, veterans and their advocates must keep up the pressure to demand reform. Regardless of temporary improvements, we mustn't lose sight of the fact that the VA needs transformation on a wide range of fronts beyond the backlog, as I wrote in the Huffington Post on Thursday. Much more to come from us. If there is ever going to be change and reform at VA, veterans -- and the American people -- must demand it. That is what you have done -- and continue to do. And for that, we thank you.
